Trump is looking to add one Hispanic American to his cabinet. Guess which job he’s got in mind.Posted: 2016-12-30
President-elect Donald Trump, who repeatedly lashed out at Mexican immigrants during the campaign, is scrambling to appoint a Hispanic official to serve in his Cabinet amid criticism that his incoming administration lacks diversity at the highest levels.
The search has intensified in recent days, and sources within the transition say officials are determined to have a Hispanic in a prominent role. According to a transition official, Trump has narrowed his focus to agriculture secretary as the best possibility of the few remaining openings, which also include veterans affairs and the U.S. trade representative.
As you may recall, there is one black man in Trump’s cabinet; Trump appointed him to run Housing and Urban Development, aka the “urban” stuff. There will apparently be one Hispanic member of Trump’s cabinet as well; he is looking for that person to be his Secretary of Agriculture. You know, the farming stuff.
A cynical person might wonder what was up with that. It has been said, for example, that Donald Trump places an extraordinary importance on looks in staffing his positions; he seeks a “central casting” quality for each role he fills; mustache-wearers need not apply.
One top donor said members of the transition are so eager to interview nonwhite officials, they have reached out to candidates who are part-Latino and have no experience in agriculture. “They’re desperate to find a Latino for agriculture,” this person said.
That’s just … huh. Huh. Yeah, I don’t know what to say on this one.
